Cisco controls over 80% of all router traffic in the United States.  Over the years, Cisco has gained market share in both home and commercial routing.

For our readers who are new to information technology, your router serves as your gateway to the Internet.  Your router is that small box with those blinking lights that flash.  When you call technical support, someone always asks you to describe how those lights are flashing.

In the corporate world, Cisco routers control hundreds or in some cases thousands of computers wanting to access the Internet.

Most network administrators will need to be familiar with routers when they begin employment.  One certification, which shows an employer that you have the necessary skills to manage a network is Cisco’s Certified Network Associate or CCNA.

The Cisco CCNA is an excellent certification to combine with your Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert or CompTIA’s Network +.

Under the CCNA category, Cisco has three other certifications, which can be obtained only after the candidate passes the Cisco CCNA exam.  These Cisco certifications include: CCNA Wireless, CCNA Security and CCNA voice over IP.

If you are interested in moving beyond the Cisco CCNA status, Cisco has two other advanced certifications, which are the Cisco Certified Network Professional and finally the Cisco Certified Internet Expert.

Students who have passed their Cisco Certified Network Associate report that they receive a raise of 9% over the first salary after they passed the Cisco CCNA.
