System Monitoring and Performance Tuning

Exam RH442 RHE

Red Hat Enterprise System Monitoring and Performance Tuning. RH442 is designed to teach the methodology of performance tuning and capacity planning for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This class will cover: a discussion of system architecture with an emphasis on understanding the implications of system architecture on system performance, methods for testing the effects of performance adjustments (benchmarking), open source benchmarking utilities, methods for analyzing system performance, and networking performance, tuning configurations for specific application loads. Where possible, emphasis will be placed on using tools that are provided as part of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Network.

Course Objectives

This course will cover the following elements:

  • Tuning for use-case scenarios (HPC, large memory, database and file server)
  • Tuning for power consumption
  • Tuning virtual machines (host and guest)
  • Tuning memory and caches
  • Tuning CPU and memory utilization using cogroups
  • Gathering performance metrics and other data for tuning purposes.

Prerequisites

Participants in RH442 should already be familiar with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Recommended minimum competency level is completion of:

  • RHCE or equivalent knowledge.

Course Benefits

Upon successful completion the student will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of performance tuning and analysis
  • Gain proficiency in using basic analysis tools and in evaluating data
  • Understand basic tuning theory and mechanisms used to tune the system
  • Understand and analyze hardware
  • Analyze CPU and memory performance of applications
  • Understand basic storage tuning using an email server and other devices
  • Understand memory management and tuning
  • Understand tuning for CPU bound applications
  • Understand storage and network tuning in the context of a file server application
  • Tune memory and network performance using a database application and other heavy applications
