To help students start the new term strong, we asked ABCO Technology faculty to share the study habits and strategies they consistently see in successful students.
Their advice highlights a few qualities again and again: attendance, participation, communication, curiosity, and consistent effort.
Whether you are beginning your first course or continuing your training, these practical tips can help you make the most of your classes and build habits that support your academic and professional development.
1. Show Up and Participate
One of the simplest but most important habits of successful students is showing up consistently.
Regular attendance helps you stay connected to the material, hear your instructor’s explanations, participate in discussions, and keep pace with the rest of the class.
This is especially important in shorter courses. When a course includes a limited number of instructional sessions, missing even one class can mean missing a significant amount of information.
But attendance alone is not enough. Successful students also participate. Ask questions. Join discussions. Contribute when you have an idea. Take part in labs, exercises, and classroom activities.
Active participation helps turn information from something you simply hear into something you begin to understand and apply.
2. Communicate With Your Instructors
Strong communication is one of the most common traits ABCO Technology faculty see among successful students.
Students who are committed to learning ask questions when they do not understand something instead of remaining silent.
And no question is too small. Often, if you are confused about something, another student may be wondering about the same thing but may be hesitant to ask.
Your instructors bring knowledge, professional experience, and industry insight into the classroom. Take advantage of that experience.
Ask for clarification. Seek guidance. Talk through difficult topics. Let your instructor know when you need additional support.

3. Stay Curious
Learning becomes more effective when you go beyond memorizing information and begin asking questions such as:
Why does this work? How does this connect to what I already know? Where might I use this in a real-world situation?

If researching technical subjects is new to you, work with your instructors and learn how to identify useful and reliable resources.

4. Take Notes Actively
Taking notes is more than simply copying information from a presentation or textbook. Good note-taking requires you to actively process what you are hearing and seeing.
Consider writing down:

One study strategy recommended by ABCO faculty is to approach reading in stages. On your first read, focus on understanding the overall scope of the material. Do not worry about memorizing everything immediately.
On your second review, begin taking notes and identifying unfamiliar terms or concepts. This is also a good time to create flashcards.
Flashcards work best when they are short and focused. Instead of putting an entire paragraph on one card, use a short sentence, definition, question, or key concept that you can review quickly.
It is also perfectly fine to break one difficult topic into several smaller flashcards. More cards can actually make complicated information easier to review.
A simple study process might look like this: Read → Identify Key Concepts → Take Notes → Create Flashcards → Review
Breaking study material into smaller steps can make learning feel more manageable.
6. Complete Your Coursework Before Adding Extra Study
It can be tempting to spend hours preparing for an exam or certification while required coursework begins piling up. ABCO faculty recommend approaching things in the opposite order. Complete your required work first.
That includes:
- Labs
- Quizzes
- Assignments
- Classroom activities
- Required reading
Once your coursework is complete, you can use additional study time for review, practice, and certification preparation.
One simple reminder from our faculty is: Pass the class first, then prepare for your certification.
Your coursework is an important part of the learning process, not something separate from it.
7. Be Kind to Your Future Self
The work you do today can make your next class, assignment, or exam easier.
Instead of leaving everything until the last minute, try to create habits that make life easier for your future self.
That might mean reviewing your notes after class, starting an assignment early, setting aside dedicated study time, or reducing distractions when you need to focus.
Consistency does not mean studying every hour of the day.
It means regularly doing the things that help you continue making progress.
It is also important to recognize your accomplishments. After completing an important task or reaching a study goal, give yourself time to rest and recharge.
